The Washington State Hospice & Palliative Organization (WSHPCO) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization committed to taking a leadership role in improving end-of-life care through education and advocacy efforts. We are dedicated to promoting and maintaining quality, compassionate care for those facing life-threatening illnesses.


What’s New…

WSHPCO Announces New Executive Director – Barbara Hansen, MA, RN, CWON, Director of Hospice and Home Health at Samaritan Evergreen Hospice (Albany, Oregon) and Good Samaritan Region Medical Center (Corvallis, Oregon) will begin her tenure as the Executive Director of  the WSHPCO in mid-July.   She will also serve as the CEO of the Oregon Hospice Association under a partnership agreement between our two organizations. 

HansenBarb was selected from a large field of qualified candidates from Oregon, Washington and the nation.  The CEO Search Committee, which included members of the Executive Committees from both the Washington State Hospice & Palliative Care Organization and the Oregon Hospice Association, were unanimously impressed with Barb’s extensive hospice and palliative care experience and exceptional leadership skills.

Barb has worked in home care for 30 years following a brief interlude as a critical care nurse. She has been a field nurse, a clinical coordinator, a home health and hospice manager and a JCAHO surveyor.  Barb obtained her B.S.N. from OHSU and has a Masters Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from Oregon State University.  After observing her blind, 87-year old grandmother learn how to take care of her own colostomy, Barb was inspired to study at Emory University to become a Wound, Ostomy Nurse in 1997.  Since 2001, Barb has been the administrator of Samaritan Evergreen Hospice in Albany, Oregon, adding a 12-bed inpatient unit to the program in 2012. In addition, she has served as director of Good Samaritan Home Health for the past year.  Barb was the recipient of the Oregon Hospice Association’s Elizabeth Wessinger Award recognizing excellence in end of life care in 2014.   Press Release

Watch the Washington State Medical Association’s  video “Honoring POLST in Private Homes and Residential Care Settings”In Washington state, if you are a part of a care team working in residential care settings, or care for clients in private homes, you may care for people who have Physician Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment (POLST) forms. This video provides caregivers with the what, when, where and how the POLST form is applied.  This video was created by at team of experts convened by the Washington State Medical Association, the Washington State POLST Task Force and the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services, and was made possible by a grant from The Retirement Research Foundation through the National POLST Paradigm Task Force.
